Why "ASD"?

"Autism," the way most people use it in everyday language, is really an adjective. It describes a collection of developmental disorders, including classic autism (Kanner), Asperger's Syndrome, Childhood Degenerative Disorder, PDD-NOS, and Rett's Syndrome. Ellie has PDD-NOS, which means she exhibits an impairment in reciprocal social interaction, but she doesn't meet any criteria for any of the other developmental disorders under the "autism umbrella." It's more concrete and correct to refer to Ellie's diagnosis as an "autistic spectrum disorder," rather than just "autism," (although I do so occasionally), because she is on the high end of the spectrum and simply doesn't fit into the "classic" profile.
